I want to say “I am from stardust or I am from infinite love!” But usually I will say, “I am Latina and I grew up in New York City….” I love my family and the culture of the home I grew up in. It was not typical or “normal” in any way.
I’ve found that a label doesn’t make our personal history less complex (though we often hope it makes us easier to relate to.) We get caught up in a whole bunch of nonsesnse that separates us but it really doesn’t need to be that way.
I think my daughter said it best when she was 5. “I am brown and all the colors of the rainbow make brown.”
Your true colors have nothing to do with where you are from or the color of your skin. They have to do with who you are and what you are doing with your life on this planet. You are powerful. You’re beautiful. Just be.
