At 40+ years old, still being called out on shit like this is humbling…
But I love to share stuff like this. Because truthfully, owning our confidence and our sense of self, is a something many of us struggle with. Even if we know we’ve come such a long way, we can slip back into old patterns. For me, not accepting compliments is an alarm. When I slip back into deflecting compliments, I try to address it right away because it’s an indicator of negative self-talk. My negative self-talk is much more subtle these days but if I am not conscious, my insecurity will lurk around waiting for the opportunity to bash.
“Eewww. Don’t let him compliment you. He just wants something. He’s lying. He obviously feels bad for you. You look weak…” Even when I have achieved many of the things I have set out to accomplish, I still find thoughts like this floating around in my mind. And if I am not active in my positive dialogue, I can slip into old behaviors that incite what? More negative self-talk and behavior.
